My parents had abandoned me. Well not likely. My dad was nowhere to be found while my mom is in the hospital having a coma well not much of a coma but she’s in heaps of pain because of my Dad. My mom had a fight with some Mafioso Family that I forgot what their name was. Anyway, they attacked mom since mom replaced dad for the meantime, being the boss. They thought that mom was the one who attacked their base somewhere in Italy. But no. My dad did. Maybe that was the reason dad ran away from us. Dad wasn’t a bad person. Not at all, but since dad had such a huge mouth about stuff, he would end up insulting a person.

And now that mom was in coma in the hospital and we don’t know when she would wake up, I’m the one who has to take care of the family.

I may have 2 siblings- my older brother and my younger sister. My mom officially picked my older brother, Kevin, to be the boss of the family. But since he was too lazy to do stuff all the time and didn’t want to do any work, he chose me instead. My older brother hates being in the family of Mafioso also and he never agreed to have this kind of dangerous life. But since he didn’t have the choice, he chose to be a rebel instead. He doesn’t know that he has the power that our family doesn’t have that he actually have. Kevin also hates dad’s gut so much. He ran away once but dad tracked him down and then brought him back. Kevin has it bad for all of us. Well not all of us. He loves me and Danielle. He loves us because we’re the only two people on the family who understands him. He told us once, “I’d protect you both even if my life’s on the line.” How sweet.

My younger sister, Danielle is in the age of 12. She’s quite shy and quiet all the time. She talks rarely and uses her actions as her words. Unlike Kevin, Danielle loves the Mafia family so much. Having the bodyguards by her side makes her feel like she’s the princess being guarded all the time.

I’m the second- obviously. I’m a year younger than my brother.

I’m not that strong just like my brother but I know I’m trusted by my family. I don’t really like the fact that I’m in the mafia either but I will do my best to make my family respect me as their boss no matter what happens because I want to make my life the best adventure in my life.

“Rrrring! Rrrring!” my alarm clock goes.  I snoozed the alarm. 5:30.

“Rrrring! Rrrring!” my alarm clock goes again. I snoozed it again. 5:40.

“Rrrring! Rrrring!” my alarm clock rings for the third time.6:00.  This time I didn’t snooze it but I smashed it. The smash was quite loud and a lot of guards came in my room.  Maybe 5-6 of them.

“it’s okay… it’s okay. It’s just my clock.” I assured them.

“Boss… please… at least stop doing the smashing thing all the time.” My personal guard tells me. His name is Angelo. His generation of families are bound to work for my family as the personal assistant of the boss.

He’s right. Everyday has always been the same routine. Well- I mean in the morning at least.

“Fine. Get me a new alarm clock. This time, make it indestructible.” I told him as I signal the other guards to leave.

“Yes, boss.”

“Please clean up the mess as soon as I come out of my bath.”

“Yes, boss.”

I opened the door to my bathroom, came in, and closed it. I can hear Angelo whistling while cleaning up the mess I just did.

I turned the shower and started to take a bath. As soon as I walk out of my shower, I heard Angelo open the door and leave. He’s probably finish with the work I assigned him. I ruffled my hair with the towel and wrapped myself with another towel. I went out of the bathroom and went to my closet.

I chose a sleeveless white shirt and added a black vest with a pair of skinny jeans and some stilettos.

I put some light make-up and started to walk out of my bedroom.

I saw Angelo leaning against the wall near my door.

“Morning.” I greeted him. He smiled.

“Morning too, boss.”

“Are they still sound asleep?” I said referring to my siblings as I watch my watch. 6:30 am.

“Yes they are.” He replied immediately.

“Good.” I said and added a little nod. Just then, my phone vibrated in my pocket. I watched it.

A message from a guard in my office. My office is where I work as their boss and all.

“Oh. A text from the guard at the office.”

The message goes like this:

“Boss, a little child came to see you. He says he needs to see you right away. I told him that you weren’t here yet but he looks as if he were in a hurry. So, he left a note instead.”

“Huh.” I shrugged.

“What is it, boss? Somethin’ happened?” Angelo asked worryingly.

“I’m not sure. Wait.” I told him and typed a reply message to the guard.

My reply message:

“I will be there as soon as I can. But in the meantime, leave the not in y office. Oh. And, did you ask the little guy what his name was?”

Angelo and I went downstairs and ate our breakfast.

When we were finally going to step out of the house, my phone vibrated again in my pocket.

“It’s from the guard again.” I told Angelo.

This time, it goes like this:

“I’m sorry for the late reply, boss. But I’m not sure. I think I asked him but I can’t seem ti remember.”

I sighed.

“How useless.” I told myself.

“Huh? Pardon?” Angelo asked.

“Oh. Uh, nothing.” I paused to think. I returned my phone where it was and checked if what time it was. 7:03.  “Tell the other guards to wake up Danielle and Kevin. It’s about time they wake up from their slumber.”

“Yes, boss.” He nodded and went upstairs. I headed out to the usual parking space of my car. I was so curious who the heck was the little guy who went to my office and why was he such in a hurry?

I shrugged the thought off of my head. When suddenly, my phone vibrated again.

Another text message from the guard.

It says:

“Boss! I remember it now. The little guy’s name was Reborn.”

Reborn!

I shouted in my mind.

The little guy who went to my office was Reborn!

I quickly opened the car and started the engine and then, Angelo came out running to me.

“Boss, you leaving without me? Hey- I’m supposed to drive.” He said while opening the car door.

“No time to explain. I’ll let you drive the car as soon as we get back from the office. I need to get there immediately. Now, hop on!” I said excitingly.

I am so eager to see Reborn again. But then, I just remembered that Reborn left in a hurry and just left a note.

“Darn.” I said to myself and Angelo looked at my direction. I tightened my grip on the stirring wheel.

“Somethin’ wrong, boss?” he asked.

“Naw.” I told him.

“Really?” he asked again- always so protective.

“Yup!” I looked at his direction and gave him my warm smile.

“Oh alright. So, what’s up with the sudden change of attitude? Somethin’ came up in the office?” he asked now looking front.

“Yup! Remember Reborn?” I asked him. I tried remembering if I told him about the time the 7 arcobaleno going at our house welcoming me as a new boss of the family.

“Hmmm… Ya. I guess I do. I was there when the 7 lil guys came to your house, remember?”

“Uh-huh.” I nodded. “Reborn, Fong, Skull-senpai and Luche were my favorite. While the 7 of them were at our house, the 4 of them showed e some of their incredible powers. Colonello-san and Lal Mirch showed theirs too but when they did, they ended up fighting each other. Viper--- better known as Mammon now, was a quiet type and always talked about money. And Verde was the smartest one yet I hate him. He never even talked while they were there at our house. All he did was type on his little computer.”

I giggled in excitement thinking about Reborn again.

“I can’t wait to see Reborn again. But since he was in a hurry, I wasn’t able to. But at least he left a note.”

“Oooh. So, that’s why you were in a hurry. Yeesh.”

“Wh-what’s wrong now?”

“Cause I thought somethin’ came up in the office.But it’s nothing really.”

I punched his arm.

“Oww!” he shrieked.

“Reborn going here is quite rare you know! How dare you say that it’s just NOTHING REALLY?!”

“Fine, fine. Sorry, boss.”

I smiled and he smiled too.

“You little silly girl.” Angelo said while pinching my nose. He does that to me a lot of times when I act childish and all.

The rest of the trip going to the office was quiet.

When I finally parked my car, I threw my keys at Angelo and ran going to my office. I greeted the guard who text messaged me about Reborn. I quite envy the guard. He gets to see Reborn and I don’t.

As I stepped in my office, I saw the note unfamiliar to me.

I rushed in and grabbed it. I opened it.

It says:

Dearest Eli-chan.

It’s been such a long time now. I know this is in such short notice but I’m going to need your help.

The Ninth Vongola Boss has chosen the one who is rightful to be on the next throne of his accomplishments. But now, the guy who he has chosen is sort of… ummm… How do I put this? NO-GOOD. He’s not really “someone” in his school either. Actually, he doesn’t even have any skills. He has no knowledge of all the Mafia stuff. So, here’s my favor. Can you come here in Japan with me, and some others who I called to help? I told them the same thing I told you. We have to train the next 10^th Vongola Boss to be a good Mafia Boss that cares about his family and become strong and to get accepted by his ancestors. And to do that, I’m going to have some company. And therefore, I choose you.

I know you’re somehow busy and all but if you won’t decide to help me, then it’d be fine. I understand. But if you will, I’d be very grateful.

I checked to see if the map he was saying was there. And there it was.

I sighed.

I’d wanted to do it but I can’t. None of my siblings wanted to get the position of being the boss of the family even just for a while. Well- I’m sure Danielle would want to get it but she’s too young for the position.

I sighed again.

I sat for a moment in my chair.

What should I do?

I thought for a while and then, it struck me.

Mom.

I went out of my office and saw Angelo leaning against the wall again. He followed me.

“What is it with you and walls?” I asked him.

“What is it with you and the word RUSH?” he asked back.

I laughed.

“I need to go to Mom and ask something very important.” I answered him.

“Oh.” He replied.

When we finally reached the room where my mom was in, I sighed deeply.

I knocked.

“Come in.” my mom says in a whisper from inside.

I came in quietly.

I saw Mom in her bed with some weird technologies to keep her alive. I went near her bed and sat down next to her.

“Hey. How’re you?” I asked.

“I’m fine. Though I still have some scratches and bruises that still hurt. This couldn’t make me walk even just for little steps. But, I’m fine. How have you been with your brother and sister? It’s been such a long time I haven’t seen them.” she asked.

“I’m sorry about that. I’m the one who tells them not to go to the office. Besides, we both know that even Kevin doesn’t want to go here but Danielle… She’s having fun with her guards. So, they’re fine. Kevin hasn’t been in fights recently. And Danielle is still the same old Danielle that we know.”

“That’s good. How about you, sweetie? How have YOU been?”

I shrugged.

“Mom… How did you?”

She smiled.

“You only come to visit me when you’re in a problem or you need something. That’s how I know you. You’re a busy girl. You have a lot to take care of. You even still have school. It’s incredible how you can manage to take up both while you’re still young.”

“I guess so.”

“So, tell me. What’s bothering you?”

“Well…”

I told Mom about the letter I received this morning and that it was from Reborn. I also told her that if I would get it, who would stay and be the boss? Or teach Danielle about the Mafia stuff and all. All Mom did was just nod and nod and until I finished my sentence, she smiled.

“I would allow you to go to Japan.”

“Really? But how about---”

She held my hand.

“All you need to do is convince your brother. I know that he won’t accept himself when I’d be the one who ask him, so, I’d want you to talk to him instead. And don’t worry about Danielle. I will be the one will teach her. And since we don’t know when you’ll come back, I want you to take Angelo with you. And if ever you need anything in Japan that we have here in Italy, don’t hesitate to ask. We’re always here for you. Don’t forget that.”

She smiled.

“Mom…” I didn’t know what to say at first. “Thank you.” Was all in my mind.

I told Angelo bout the plan and he agreed to come with me. I went back to my office and sat. My room was such a mess. I don’t care about it anyway. I looked around my office and tried remembering if there was something I forgot when I leave Italy. 

Dad.

“Angelo, do you think Leo is here now?” I asked him.

He checked his watch.

“Yeah. I guess so. Do you want me to call him, boss?”

“Yes. And make it fast. Tell him it’s urgent when he insists on coming here.”

“Alright.” Angelo said and went out of my room.

Leo is one of my trusted spies here. I made him in charge of looking for Dad. Wherever Dad is right now, it’s his job to find him and report to me whatever my Dad is doing. My mom, Kevin nor Danielle doesn’t know about Leo’s assignment. Only Angelo and I know about it. 

I waited for a while when a knock was heard.

“It’s me, Leo.” A voice familiar to me said.

I cleared my throat.

“Come in.” I said.

Leo came in with his usual formal suit and always has been adoringly handsome.

I made him seat.

“So what’s with the URGENT call? Somethin’ happened, boss?”  He asked.

I sighed.

“I plan on going to Japan and I will not be your boss for a while. And, I’m sure with your new boss, there are going to be a lot of changes in the base. So, please, no matter what, don’t ever tell your new boss about your assignment because it’s only between the three of us, get it? And since I’m going to Japan and I’m not going to be here for a while, I’m going to add you up with a new assignment. You’re going to have to tell me anything that happens here while I’m gone. But remember, no one should know about your assignments. Got it?”

“Ummm… Yeah, sure, I guess. Bit which assignment should I focus on most?”

“That would be looking for Dad. Oh-wait. Speaking of Dad, have you heard from him?”

“No, boss. I’ve searched a lot of area here in Italy even the family’s underground passages but there are still no traces of your Father. I’m sorry, boss.”

I sighed.

“Naw. It’s fine. but pleas look deeper. I’m sure he hasn’t gone far. Dad isn’t like that---”

Angelo bursted in my office and shrieked, “Boss, time to leave. It’s time to fetch your brother and sister.”

I stood up.

“Okay.” I turned to Leo who was still seating. “I’m counting on you, alright?”

“Yes, boss.” He said and did the salute thing as if we’re soldiers.

“Tsk. Childish as usual.” I murmured and took my bag and went out of my office.

“Angelo, I need you to tell the maids of the base that they need to clean up my stuff in the office.”

“But, you’re not even sure yet if Kevin would take your replacement.”

“I have to go to Japan. I’m sure I’ll figure out somethin’ that would make him be the boss for just the meantime.”

“But I thought you said that you don’t even know when you’ll come back.”

“Kevin has to figure that fact out sometime! Yeesh!”

“But---”

“What is it with you and the word BUT?”

“What is it with you and choices?”

When we finally arrived at home, I saw Kevin and Danielle waiting for me.

“Why are you late, today?” Danielle asked.

“Because… I needed to take care of something very important, honey.”

“Oh!” she replied.

“always so busy with work huh, sis?” Kevin asked with his serious tone.

“Watch your tone, bro. We need to talk later. It’s very very important.”

“Everything is important about work to you,” Kevin challenged.

I grew annoyed.

“I don’t have time to fight with you. I have a lot of things in mind.”

“Oh really? Let me guess? It’s about work, huh?”

“What’s wrong with you, Kevin? Why do you really hate the family’s business so much?”

“Okay, guys. Stop fighting would ya?” Danielle commented.

“We’re not fighting, sweetie. Your brother and I are just have a SERIOUS conversation.” I assured her and emphasized my word and stared into Kevin’s eyes.

“I don’t wanna hear your annoying nags already. So, shut up.” Kevin said and looked away.

“You’re such a chicken that’s why.” I said.

Kevin didn’t say anything else but just showed me his angry face. Angelo, who was driving the car, was giggling. How could he be giggling in a time like this? Now how can I convince Kevin that he should become the boss while I’m away? UGH. Me and my big mouth. This is such a catastrophe!

When we arrive at school, Angelo went out of the car to open the door of our car. Danielle was the first one to go out and when Kevin half-stood, I took his sleeve and pulled him in the car.

“Angelo, lock the car.” I ordered him.

He closed the door and rushed in the front seat and he went in to lock the door.

“What do you want now?” Kevin asked still furious at me.

I sighed deeply.

“Look, I’m going to need a favor from you.” I told him.

“What?! What is it about?”

I know Kevin’s furious, but I know he’s always there to help out.

“It’s about the family.” I told him and he pulled his arm from me and he went to open the car door.

“It’s locked remember?” I reminded him.

He groaned.

“Angelo, open the god damn car!” he ordered Angelo.

Angelo just froze.

“You can’t order him like that. I’m the only one who has the right to do such a thing!” I reminded him.

“Well, if you both can’t open it, then I’d be happy to break this car.” He said and pulled out his whip.

Kevin has the weapon of the whip, Danielle has her ribbon, I have my pretty bracelets that if I eat my pills and my dying will flame would burst, it would turn into a flamethrower.

Kevin sprung his whip and as he turned it, I took out my dying will pill and I turned.

I held up my flamethrower at him.

“Drop the whip, Kev.” I told him seriously

“Or what?” he asked.

“Or-or… or…” I didn’t know what to say.

“Ha! You can’t hurt me can’t you? I am your brother and you can never hurt me.” He said.

“That may be true. But I’m sure you don’t want to see us both fight too.” He stare at me for a while and then he finally lowered down his whip.

“What is it about now?”  He asked while withdrawing his whip.

I sighed deeply.

“Look, I need to go to Japan---” I said when he interrupted me.

“WHAT!?” he shrieked. “WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO DO THERE IN JAPAN?!”

“I knew from the moment you interrupted me, your reaction was going to be like that.”

“Then why are you telling me all this?!” he said still freaking out.

“I’m telling you this because I…” I paused for a while. “I… I need you to be the boss of the family when I will be gone.”  I said and covered my face with my hands and waited for his answer.

“Are you insane, Sis!? Why do you think I gave you the freaking position in the first place!? I never want to be in the family’s business in my whole life!”

Just let it all out, Kevin. Just let all your anger go out. I told to myself.

“And besides, does mom know about this?!”   

I nodded.

He stared at me for a while with his huge eyes seeming like it is going inside my soul.

“What’s with the stare?” I asked him.

“I knew this was going to happen sooner or later.” He said and then sighed.

“Huh? What do you mean by that? Wait--- So, are you going to accept it?”

“I’ll think about it.”

“Wait- what?! This is very urgent how could you just say that you’ll think about it?! Ugh. I can’t believe you, Kevin!”

“Angelo, open up the door.” He ordered Angelo again.

Angelo looked at me. I put my hand on my face and I heard the lock click. Kevin opened the car door.

“Thank you. How about we meet later, sis? How about the usual resto we love going on? My treat.” He smiled and left.
